What appears on the surface as a delightful heart is rooted in death.
Inome is a Japanese word that translates to boars eye.
Once their eyes have met their prey boars are considered to be some of the most ruthless predators.
Dating back to the Kofun period, circa 3rd to 6th century, Japanese weapons were decorated with this symbol as a way to protect the bearer.
The motifs are meant to neutralize any curses and attract good fortune while sending away evil spirits.
A samurai accepts the impermanence of life and the nobility of death.
Two arrowhead hairpin designs are available in two different materials.
925 sterling silver and solid yellow brass.
The single Inome is at the center of a broad leaf shaped blade and measures 6.4 inches (16.2cm).
The other design measures 7.1 inches (18cm) and is a cherry blossom, Sakura, a symbol resonating with the fleeting nature of life as the cherry blossom bloom is vibrant but brief.
While an obvious sparkly hair adornment the hairpins have been sharpened to a point in order for them to also be used for protection. So please handle them with respect and caution.
Each of these hairpins are carefully hand crafted by a highly experienced artisan jeweler.
Those precise and dainty holes with a sharpened tip require high levels of skill and patience.
